Never been so happy to see my cake destroyed!!

I can't believe I'm saying this but my baby just turned 1!!! As you know, I've been on an extended maternity leave for the past year. Look at that little face... can you blame me? This little boy is a ray of sunshine and I have loved every minute of the extra time I have been able to spend with him!!

This is probably unbelievable for the child of a cake maker, but he didn't have a single taste of cake or frosting before his first birthday! It's a rule of mine and all of my kids have stuck to it! (no matter how much their grandparents may have insisted)

Enter the first birthday cake smash!!!!

I think he liked it! Actually, he loved it. I have never been so happy to see one of my cakes destroyed!!! It was an absolute joy for everyone at his party to watch. Happy Birthday little one. I'm sure that's not the last of Mommy's cakes you'll enjoy ;)

Collaboration!

I was so excited to pick up the new issue of Giggle Magazine with our baby owl on the front cover! You can view the online version here or pick one up today. This photo shoot was such a joy to be part of. Giovanni, from Footstone Ink, is a great friend and is so incredibly creative and talented. We worked into the morning hours via computer and text message to create the adorable baby owls for the stationary and cakes.

I love working with Gio. He took ideas from my cake sketches. I took ideas from his invites and when we put them together it came out like this:

Pretty great, huh? I can't stress enough how important the little details are! Choose vendors that work well together. It will really show in the cohesive and pulled together look of your event!

Thank you to Krystal from Verve Studio for the amazing pictures.

Don't be a "CopyCake"!!!

Dear Brides,
I know it may seem tempting to look through bridal magazines or wedding blogs to find "the" cake of your dreams. Well, here's a little warning... do so at your own risk! Creating an exact replica of a cake is nearly impossible, especially if it was originally created by someone else. Here's a little visual example for you:

Remember this cake I made in 2009?

It was custom designed by me to match the couple's wedding invitations. One of my favorite things about this cake is the handmade sugar peony!

Apparently, a bride saw it on the photographer's blog and loved it. That's great! Here's where things went wrong... it seems she took the picture to her baker who convinced her that my cake could be duplicated for her wedding. Unfortunately, the results were not quite the same.

Here's the "copy cake" complete with a silk/paper flower.

So.... the moral of the story is, don't let a baker tell you that they can exactly "copy" someone else's work! You don't want a knock off wedding cake!!! Please, please look at your baker's portfolio. If you don't see the quality or style that you are looking for, go somewhere else! (preferably Posh Pastry) :)
