A Sweet New Look...

As you have probably noticed, the blog has been undergoing a transformation. The background has changed and I have shortened the name... Now it's called "The Sweet Life" (of a sugar artist) I think the name is truly fitting! I am so blessed to do what I love. I have wonderful clients and amazing friends. It really is a sweet life!

One of my favorite changes is the new blog header created for me by the incredibly talented Unique Designs team!!! I love it so much that you may be seeing it on something else soon. Don't worry, there will be pictures. If you haven't already, check out the Unique Designs Blog! They have some gorgeous Christmas cards, plus free downloads, and lots of invitations to spark your creativity.

Movie Ticket Winners & A big Thank You!

First, the winners for tickets to go see New Moon!:)

We used a very complex random generating process from Random.org involving randomly selecting a vendor who has a blog/facebook/twitter, randomly selecting one of those from the vendor, then randomly selecting a commenter/retweeter. Ahhhhhh! After all that, winners have been selected and will be contacted by the vendor they commented on.:)

From Posh Pastry’s Blog: Kaci Tetstone
From Pure’s Twitter: Amanda (SwoonOverIt)
From Unique Design’s Blog: Kathy (KB Cakes)
From Kari’s Facebook: Shanna Dixon

And we also wanted to send out a “Thank You” to a couple blogs who featured us! You can click on the screenshot to go check out their posts!

Secret Project.... Twilght concept wedding!!!

I am so excited to finally be able to share our secret project!!!! Here's how it started...

Due to a slight obsession, {Unique Designs} wanted to create a Twilight wedding invitation, an idea which blossomed into a full concept design and shoot. The intent was not to replicate Bella & Edward’s wedding, which was actually an Anne of Green Gables dress and was filled with white flowers, but to make another wedding style based on the mood and concept of Twilight. To acknowledge Edward’s personality, we chose a dramatic look with bold flowers, strong reds, and splashes of black feathers. To incorporate Bella, we wanted to take a vintage twist which can be seen in the creams, vintage brooches, and antique lace.

When Giovanni, from Unique Designs, called and asked me to be part of this project I was thrilled. My mind was racing with ideas. I wanted to make a cake that was elegant, timeless, and beautiful like Edward. I brought in Bella's softer side with a lace design and vintage style brooches. I have so many pictures to share. I'm going to start with a few of my favorites. The cake features a cut sugar lace design with sashes and bows that are made of sugar too!

Here is a close up shot of my cake and the stunning invite by Unique Designs. I
can't believe how well they go together!!! Beautiful aren't they?

Here is a preview of the daylight shoot, which was also incredibly beautiful... come back later today to see more and to find out how to win tickets to the movie!!!!!

I want to send a very special thank you to all of the vendors who made this photo shoot so amazing! Make sure to visit their website and blogs for more images of our Twilight New Moon photo shoot.

She sells sea shells...

Well, not really, I just like that rhyme.

I love the simple beauty of this cake. It was for a small beach themed wedding. The shells are hand made from white chocolate. The bride wanted a really clean simple look, so we kept the shells all white and added a little shimmer to make them stand out.

This is a close up view of the shells. Not only are they pretty, but they are yummy too!

I want one!!!

I admit, this post has nothing to do with cakes but it's my blog so I guess I can talk about whatever I like. When I saw a picture of this bike I wanted one sooo bad. It has such a cool casual feel. Maybe you have to be a mom with an ugly yellow bike cart hooked up behind your bike to appreciate the beauty of this thing. Since Christmas is coming up, I just thought I put this out there. Do you love it too?

Secret Project

I am so excited about a secret project I have coming up. It's super creative and I'm sure you are all going to love it! I have been working on this design for a while now. I've been keeping a sketch book beside my bed and drawing up new stuff every night, when I should be sleeping.

I can't wait to share this with all of you!!!

Fun Night at Solutions!

I had such a great time at Solutions Bridal last night. I was so happy to be asked to participate in their Denim and Diamonds bridesmaids night! I brought along some Posh Pretzels and little chocolate cake bites. They were both a huge hit!

I love the Solutions Girls! They are so good at what they do. Last night I saw lots of bridesmaids come in and find great dresses. I even saw one super cute bride find "her" perfect dress. It was such a cool moment when the popped the champagne. They were all laughing and crying. What a great job.

See you girls again soon!

Catch...

My brother-in-law got married last month and I was more than happy to create a custom groom's cake to really fit Jeff. He is a baseball player. Steve and I have been married for twelve years so when I met Jeff he was only twelve years old. I've seen tons of his baseball games from Babe Ruth to high school. So, there was really only one choice for his groom's cake....

He loved it and was such a good sport for taking pictures. Not only did it look cool but it was sooo delicious. He chose chocolate cake filled with caramel and ganache.

I've had a little work done...

Well, not me but my logo has gone under the knife so to speak. I have always loved my logo. I knew what I wanted it to look like and my husband (who is not a graphic designer, just a guy with Photoshop) did a great job making it for me. I still like it, but Posh Pastry has grown so quickly. I felt like our logo and image should match the incredible creations that come out of our cake studio. Who did I call... Giovanni and his team at Unique Designs, of course!

Working with them is so amazing! I wanted to stay true to my original design, but it needed to be polished and updated. Giovanni listened to everything I wanted and came up with such a beautiful combination of old and new. I absolutely love it! They also created some new marketing materials (come see them at the bridal show Sept. 13th) and a circle logo witch is now featured on my website.

I know I'm starting to sound like the president of the Unique Designs fan club.... OK well, maybe I am... but they deserve it. The Unique team truly cares about their clients. Their work is creative, beautiful, innovative and truly Unique! Thanks guys!!!!

We're on the blog

I love Leah at Celebrations Catering. She is so incredibly sweet and her food is insanely good! One of my favorite things about Leah is that she always has her camera with her. A few months ago we attended an event at Bay Laurel. I made several kinds of treats including a couple different styles of Posh Pretzels. I was in a huge hurry that day and forgot my camera. Luckily Leah had hers, and she posted some pics on her blog today. Go check them out!

Pure Delight

One of my favorite photographers, Lindsey Tropf, of Pure: Photography by Linsey Tropf has completely redone her business branding: colors, logo, website, business cards, blog, and more. To celebrate and share her own excitement, she is having a week of GiveAways before her
launch with unique wedding items from both local vendors and some personal Etsy favorites.

There will even be a Posh Pastry give away! If you read my blog then you know how absolutely in love I am with the pictures Lindsey did of my pink and black cake! She is so incredible! I can't wait to see the new website. If you haven't seen her work go to her blog NOW and check it out! Every day will be a new GiveAway with the winner(s) announced the next day. The prizes get larger and more expensive, so be sure to keep coming back until the end!

Playing with dummies...

Dummy cakes that is. They can be so incredibly helpful. I can picture in my mind what a stacked 6,8,10 will look like and can tell how the spacing will differ from a 6, 9, 11. I know how a cake with a 4" top tier will look, but my brides may not. That's where the dummies come in. I have all shapes and sizes, hights and widths. When I'm planning a new cake, I pull them off the shelf and stack them up. It's great to be able to visualize what the cake will look like beyond the sketch. I even brought a box full of them to a bride's house to make sure that she would love the cake we planned for her. (wink, wink, Kari :)

This picture is the dummy cake version of the cake we made for Kari this past weekend. I have found that it is very helpful to use dummies when the cake is a nontraditional shape or size. I sent Kari this picture from my shop to get her OK before I started baking the real one.

Inspiration is everywhere

Right now I'm on a cross country road trip with my family. While staying at an amazing hotel in Texas, I learned something about my kids... They see cakes everywhere, just like their Mom. We were up on the 9th floor looking down at the atrium below when my three year old asked me about the birthday cake. In the Mom way I said "oh yea" and went on down the hall. The next day my six year old asked me how long they were going to keep the giant cake down there. This time I stopped and payed closer attention. There was a small cafe with a very unique roof in the atrium. It looked like an amazing Asian style wedding cake.

It was then that I realized that my kids have grown up seeing unique custom cakes. They were used to seeing nontraditional style and cool design. I know most people don't walk around looking at objects and seeing cake designs in them like I do, but it was really cool to see that my kids are picking it up. They love art and design and I'd love to have them join me in the cake studio one day.

The kids inspired me so much that I took my camera around the hotel looking for more "cakes" and found the most beautiful Wedgewood vases and plates. They would make an amazing cakes! Thanks boys!!!

Uniquely New

By now, I hope you are following the Unique Designs blog. If you aren't... why not? They had an amazing week of giveaways last week to celebrate the launch of their new website. Including a $100.00 gift certificate for some Posh Pretzels. I can't wait to see who the lucky winner is.

Unique's new website is AMAZING! I'm not just saying it because I am lucky enough to call them friends. Their work is the most beautiful and creative I've ever seen. Everything they make is completely custom so if you're looking for more than cookie cutter invites or announcements you have to check them out!!!

Love Unique

My friends at Unique Designs have launched their new blog. Have you been over there to check it out yet? I have not seen more amazing invitations anywhere! They will absolutely create something stunning and "unique" for your event.

The new blog is just the beginning for them. They have a new logo, a new look, and soon... a new website. I can't wait to see it. I have seen some of the super secret pictures, and they are amazing too! I love Unique... and I know you will too.

Darling Damask

I had the pleasure of making Annie's wedding cake this weekend. I have to say that she had some of the worst weather I've seen on a wedding day in a long time. She took it all in stride. They got married under umbrellas and looked good doing it.

I really don't like cake deliveries in the rain. Not only is the drive terrifying ( we saw three wrecks on the way to the reception site) but getting the cake out of the van and into the venue is a challenge. I'm happy to say that Annie's cake arrived safely ( and dryly) The reception was decorated with black and white damask with pink flowers. It was beautiful, and the cake matched perfectly.

Ready For My Close Up

You can probably tell that I am in Love with the pictures that Lindsey of Pure by Lindsey shot of my cake. This one is now a featured cake on my website. This is a close up of the sugar peony that I made for Matt and Tracey's wedding cake.

Speaking of Matt and Tracey, I got the sweetest note from Tracey!

Hi Kristy,
The cake was absolutely amazing!! I didn't get to eat much of it, but what I did eat was so good! People are still telling us how good it was and how awesome it looked!

Thanks again!
Tracey

My job is so awesome!

Touchy Touchy

A few months ago Susan, from Powers Photography, sent me some images that they took of my gator Groom's cake. This is beautiful bride and groom cutting the cake. Do you notice anything about the gator? Let me help you find it...

This is the cake the way it was delivered.

Do you notice anything now??? :)
I don't know why, but people LOVE touching cakes. This poor gator got poked in the eye and had his teeth pulled out before the couple got to cut him. I'm going to blame this one on kids attending the wedding. Surely it was a child who didn't know better, right? You'd be surprised how many touchy touchy grown ups I've seen out there.

Remember folks, it's a cake and other people are going to eat it. Let's try to keep our fingers to ourselves :) (spoken in my best "Mom" voice)

A big thanks to Powers Photography for the images! More pictures of this beautiful wedding are featured on their website.

Magazine Worthy!

I am beyond excited to show you these pictures of Matt and Tracey's wedding cake!!!! Lindsey Tropf , of Pure by Lindsey, did an amazing job photographing their cake. It looks like it should be in a magazine! It is so thrilling to have my work photographed by someone so talented! Her style is so modern and cool. If you haven't been to her website, you should definitely check it out!

This picture features my tuxedo cake, alternating layers of white and chocolate fudge cake filled with chocolate mousse, white chocolate mousse and chocolate ganache! Yummy!!!

One last thing, the peony is hand made out of sugar! It's one of my favorite things about this cake. Each time I put another petal on, I loved it more!!!!

Ceck Us Out!

We've been blogged about! Matt and Tracey are the sweetest couple and I was thrilled to make their cake. Their wedding (including the cake) is featured on two blogs today.

The ladies of Masterpiece weddings did a fabulous job with all the details. You can read about how they did it here.

This is me working on the cake, captured by Amanda of Masterpiece Weddings.

The next blog we made an appearance on is Pure by Lindsey. She is an amazing photographer with such a cool style. Check out her beautiful pictures of the wedding here.

Awesome Angle

Two weeks ago I had the pleasure of meeting Jordan Smith from Green Flamingo Photo. She is such a cool girl and her work is so amazing! She took this picture of one of my cakes and I absolutely love it! It's such a interesting angle and really different than any I've had taken before. Thanks Jordan!

If you haven't already, go check out her website!

Photon Studio

Last week, I participated in a beautiful event by Avie at Bay Laurel. I was lucky enough to have my cake and pretzels photographed by Dana Rasmussen of Photon Studio! I am completely in love with the image of the cake. I don't usually like pictures of the back side of cakes, but this one is just so beautifully shot.
The pretzels were a huge hit and so was my new creation... cake shots. They are super fun, and I'll be posting more about them later.

I want to thank Angela for including me in this event and Dana for the awesome pictures!

Rear View

I just love this picture. I think it's both cute and a little creepy. This is the rear view of my possum cake. I think the tail is pretty lifelike. Surprisingly, this cake was for a Christmas party. LOL... My clients are so great!

One of my Favorites

This summer I made a cake for a great girl, Lauren. She had a summery, tropical theme reception at the Gateway Grand. This cake was so yummy too! It was my classic white cake filled with pineapple and coconut filling, summery and fresh!

Sketches

This is a sketch that I made for the garden wedding cake I posted last week. Keep in mind, I'm a sugar artist... not a pen and paper artist.

As you can see, I varied from the sketch a little. The Bride and Groom wanted rounded edges. The scrollwork was changed a little and the flower on the top tier would have been "too much" in real life. Doing a sketch like this gives the bride an preview of what to expect and gives me a basic plan to follow.

Garden Wedding

Yesenia and Alexis had such a beautiful wedding at Kanapaha Gardens. The cake was made to fit beautifully into the the surroundings. The sugar orchids were hand painted to match the orchids that were used in the floral arrangements.

Posh Pretzels

Last weekend brides at Solutions Bridal were treated to a "Posh Pretzel" when they came in for a consultation. Posh Pretzels are gourmet chocolate dipped pretzels. They make such great favors and can customized for any color scheme. Yummy!
